To the guy in the black VW:

So I just came back from my piano lesson. Normally I would just go home after my lesson but today I had to come back to work to keep working on this stuff for Friday's workshop. I was a little bummed about having to come back here, but something just happened to make it all worth while:

I was driving on Hollister and you were in a black VW bug behind me at a stoplight and you were just rocking out to your tunes. You weren't singing along but you had the shoulders going and head bobbing. Your hands were on the steering wheel waiting for the light to turn green but the rest of your upper body was groovin. I have no idea what you were listening to. I kept hoping you would sing along so I could see if it was the Billy Squier I had on KLOS ("My Kinda Lover"). Now that I think about it, you almost have Billy's hair -- it was long dark and shaggy. You had a small flower in the vase in your VW. Watching you rock out with such an utter and complete lack of self-consciousness made me inexplicably happy. I even briefly considered posting something on Craig's List on one of those "missed connections" pages just to find out what music it was. But my friend K pointed out that I could get random weirdos and I would have no way of verifying the identity of the respondents. So I will just have to be satisfied with never knowing the complete story. With never being able to thank you for making my day. So, the next time you are rocking out in your car, do it with abandon. You might make a stranger incredibly happy.
